Enjoying waterfalls along the parkway is a highlight of any visit, but safety comes first. Rocks near waterfalls are often slick from mist and algae - never climb on them, and use extra care when walking along riverbanks. Please note that swimming in parkway waters is prohibited.
A waterfall hike can be a memorable way to spend your day. Below you'll find a selection of popular trails featuring waterfalls along the parkway.

Near Peaks of Otter, this trail winds through dense rhododendron thickets, making for a scenic and shaded hike.
Four different overlooks provide sweeping views of the falls, accessible via two main trails. Both start at the Linville Falls visitor center and meander through a remnant virgin hemlock forest mixed with white pine, oaks, hickory, and birch. In spring, the trails are dotted with a colorful variety of wildflowers; in autumn, red and gold leaves create a striking contrast against the evergreen hemlocks. The trails range from moderate to strenuous.
A 2.5-mile loop leads to spectacular Crabtree Falls, where water tumbles over a 60-foot rock cliff. The cool spray from the falls nurtures an abundance of ferns and wildflowers in the hollow below. Originally known as Murphy's Falls, the name was changed when the Parkway was built in the 1930s.
A 15-minute drive (9 miles) from the Parkway down US 276 South brings you to this waterfall in Pisgah National Forest. One of the most symmetrical waterfalls in western North Carolina, it takes its name from nearby Looking Glass Rock - so called because winter ice on its sheer face reflects sunlight like a mirror. No hiking is required to view the falls, making it a favorite for visitors of all abilities.
A short walk from the Parkway along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail leads to this scenic cascade.
The unusual name comes from a historic windstorm that leveled hundreds of spruce and fir trees, leaving moss-covered stumps that resembled gravestones. Today, the area offers a striking landscape and a popular waterfall destination.
